Learning how to play fantasy football is quite easy. Although you've several web-based leagues to choose from, the basics of playing fantasy football remains virtually the same for all.

Step 1 You can join a league or create your own one. In most cases, creating your own league immediately makes you the chairman or commissioner but this largely depends on the rules provided by the gaming website. The commissioner is the one setting the rules for the league. Familiarize yourself with the rules of the league. Make sure you understand the drafting process and scoring system used. Leagues may or may not be free to join. Prizes may or may not be offered.

Step 2 Start building your own team. To get members for your fantasy football team, you need to participate in a draft. In a serpentine draft, the order of selection is random. In an auction draft, the team placing the highest bid on a specific player gets the chance to sign him up on his team. Take note of the starting budget you'll be equipped with and if there's a salary cap provided. The latter limits the amount of money you can pay a player.

Be aware of the number of players you're allowed to fill a certain position as well. Focus more on improving your team based on the following positions: quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, kickers, and defenses.

Step 3 Once the actual NFL season kicks in, your fantasy football league commences as well. If your website doesn't offer real-time statistics for you to monitor the performance of your players and team in general, you might have to upgrade your account to access such information.

Step 4 Take note of players suddenly placed on the injured list since you'll need to replace them. Take note of your players bye weeks as well. It's very important that your starters and backups have different bye weeks or you'd enjoy zero improvement in your teams performance for at least one week.

Step 5 Know the number of transfers you're allowed to make in a given time period. Use them as you will. Take note of the players that other teams have waived or dropped off. They could be excellent additions to your team roster. When making trades, remember two important maxims: buy low, sell high and quality is still better than quantity!

Step 6 Constantly monitor your team. At the end of the season, the team with the highest number of points will be declared the winner. Some leagues offer prizes as well for teams with the highest number of points in a day or week.
