Getting Into Fantasy Football

By: David Riewe

Football, on its own, is a great way to unwind: with some chips and drinks, a good couch, and a lazy afternoon, you can hog the TV and cheer for your favorite team. Or, if you can afford it, you can buy tickets to the big game, buy your snacks at the stadium, and join the rest of the world as you scream for victory.

There's another option, though, for football fanatics. Thanks to the Internet and the obsession of football fans everywhere, fantasy football is now available for eager beavers to try their hand at managing teams and winning their own games. If you constantly shout at the TV screen for the coach to pick your player of choice and throw someone off the field, here's your chance to actually do your own picking and dumping in the virtual arena.

Getting into Your Fantasies

If you have every played a fantasy stock market game, you will understand the dynamics of fantasy football. In fantasy stock market games, you play around with real stocks, and base your earnings or losses on how well the stock performs in the market at a given time. In fantasy football, you play the part of a team owner. You are also part of a league, and you can draft real players onto your team, whether from the National Football Leagues (NFL) current roster of players, or from the NCAA.

You get your players via a draft or an online auction and you get your points based on how well your players perform on the real playing field. There are different ways that leagues can be divided: they can be ranked according to points, or teams can play against other teams in a round robin each week. When the fantasy football year ends, points are tallied, and playoff brackets, as well as league rankings, are determined.

Winning the Fantasy Game

Fantasy football team leagues will have around eight to fourteen teams, sometimes referred to as redraft leagues, where owners start from scratch and draft entirely new players; keeper leagues, where owners keep a few team players and get new ones; and dynasty leagues, where owners draft only rookies but keep all the old, good players in the team. Drafts can be picked or auctioned off, so if you are hoping for some competition early on in the game, you can try your luck at player bidding.

There are numerous other complications that fantasy football can incorporate. For instance, players have yearly salaries, and these salaries are mirrored in fantasy football. You can keep a player for only a certain time before he has to get off the team and back on the auction block. You can spend all your money on training, but you have to set money aside to pay your star players.

Technology is always finding ways of making fantasy football even more engaging. In a year-round version of fantasy football, owners can actually watch their games being played instead of waiting for NFL statistics to come in. This version, called Simulation Football, is controlled by computer.

Your Players are Your Riches

Draft day is quite an important day in fantasy football, as team owners work out their predictive powers to get the best players on their team. In fact, any game is a big day in fantasy football, so much so that games have been carried out in major locations, such as restaurants, convention centers, or casinos. With a host of computer terminals and thousands of fans waiting to compete, a fantasy football game day can be as rowdy and as fun as any real game day.

Sadly, not all NFL enthusiasts are as enthusiastic about the virtual game. Some players complain that fans have become so wrapped up in the fantasy world that they might have forgotten to watch their favorite players come real game day. Still, fantasy football is going strong, and more and more players are finding their way to fantasy football sites online.

There are many different sites available online that can help you get started. Before you sign on, however, check out player stats and look at how well your favorites are faring. As you navigate through the fantasy football site, take note of game rules and regulations, as well as innovations in game play. There are many different ways that you can enjoy your favorite game, and fantasy football is one option for you. Get your chips and drinks ready!
