Great comments here, thanks for sharing your knowledge about the subject. I've been doing keyword research for a long time, and never found a right way to profit from it... until now ;-)

I've always recommended ignoring KEI. Why? Because you cannot really measure demand. KEI measures how many web pages are relevant for a search term, not how many are competing for it.

I use this analogy. If you have to move across New York City, would you prefer to be doggedly pursued by ten thugs searching for you high and low, tracking you down? Or would you prefer to cross the city while 1000 thugs are over at Louie's Sports Bar cheering for their favorite World Cup team?

If there are 10 or 15 websites aggressively pursuing certain search terms, and there are just 2 or 3 websites aggressively pursuing certain others, it really does not matter what the KEI is; go where the competition is lightest, even if there are way more relevant pages.

<em>David Leonhardt SEO's last blog post..<a href='http://www.seo-writer.com/blog/2008/07/18/making-your-blog-a-destination-in-your-niche/' rel="nofollow">Making Your Blog a Destination in Your Niche</a></em>

I agree, good keyword research is critical to a successful site, but good copywriting is just as important if you want to get orders placed.

Hi Missy,

Sorry to give you a headache :-) What it really comes down to is Supply and Demand.

Here is a hypothetical example

Lets say you have the choice between doing a blog about polar bears and blue whales. Lets also, for simplicity, say that both have the same amount of searches per month. What is different is there are 10 million pages about polar bears and only 100,000 about blue whales.

It would obviously be easier to get better ranking by doing a page about blue whales because it is not as "crowded".

both have the same demand (number of searches) but the supply is different.

KEI is nothing but a number that reflects the potential of a particular niche. The higher it is then the more likely you can do well in that market.

Most marketers start with finding a product they like then try to find someone to sell it to. The correct way is to find a problem people are looking to solve that no one, or few people have given a solution to.

In terms of bloggers, write about information that people are looking for which isn't being given by everyone else and their dog.

Honestly, I would download Myleena Phan's free report from http://www.profitable-niche.com/nicheinspector
She explains it very well.

Dave: You're giving me a BIG headache. I think alot of this keyword research stuff (KEI, blah blah blah) would make alot of sense to me if i knew PPC, right?

As PPC is the one area of net marketing i have yet to touch. I've been meaning to dabble in it and try it, but have not yet. Will make it a goal for 2008.

So far, my keyword research technique, involves going to a keyword tool and typing in my word for related words and for search volume. NOT that advanced i know. I have alot to learn i see. OMG.

Will check out your blog for tips, and thanxs for visiting my blogs. I see your avatar there alot. Thanxs.

Happy Holidays!
